Featured artist - JOHN BIRT

A friend gave me a Christmas present in 2000: a blank canvas. With it came about 40 tubes of acrylic paint. I had never painted before, so I was stunned.  My sister was an art teacher, so she gave me some brushes, so all I needed was an easel and time.  After selling my financial planning business in 2002, I gave 3 years to painting, finishing off close to 40 paintings in oil and acrylic.

Regular trips to Byron Bay inspired me to paint and experiment with different techniques. A small spatula seemed to produce exceptional results with the occasional use of wax. My painting style is close to surrealism, transforming everyday objects into illogical scenes and dreamlike concepts.

Now at the age of 66, I have not painted for many years, running a busy national business that I started in 2007. I hope to retire in 2024/25 and take up painting again.

Hobbies: Cronulla Sharks NRL team, Newcastle Knights (I was lived in Newcastle until age 40) and snooker.
